There are four different ways we engage with food: we grow it, buy it, cook it, and eat it (actually, there are six if you include hunting and gathering, but I’ve chosen to stick with the ones that are available to the majority of westerners—and besides, they make for a catchier title).
The trend in developed countries over the last 100 years has been to spend less time, money, and attention—as a percentage of what we have available—on all of those activities.
The resurgence of farmers markets, the slow food movement, vegetarianism, veganism, the 100km diet, and other recent developments are demonstrations that a lot of people want to spend a little bit more time and put a little bit more thought into feeding themselves. It’s my belief that we can engage with food in ways that are simultaneously more enjoyable, more fulfilling, more ethical, healthier, and more sustainable. And that’s what this blog is about.
